چکیده

Wildland fire, a natural feature of ecosystems, causes extensive damage to forests, properties, and affects human lives. Since the last century, North American forest communities have been vitally concerned with wildland fires. In eastern United States (east of the Mississippi River), wildland fire is a very important issue because of frequent fire occurrences and their effects on the environment. The patterns of forest fires in eastern states are quite different from those in the western regions. Usually, eastern fires are small in size and many of them started as prescribed fires. However, many scientific questions remain, especially for wildland fire events at the urban-forest interface and different landscapes in eastern regions. Urban and suburban growth through the 20th Century has dramatically increased associations of housing and people with wildlands, increasing the complexity of fuel management and fire fighting activities. These features imply special requirements regarding forest fire remote sensing in eastern regions. Except for forest fire detection, burned area mapping, fire emissions, and fire danger rate estimation, fuel properties (including fuel type, fuel moisture, fuel temperature, fuel loading, etc.)which are all are especially important for decision making in management of prescribed burning and air quality related policies. Based on the analysis of current approaches for fuel property retrieval and fire characteristic estimation, and our analytical improvements, we developed an integrated system to monitor fire characteristics and fire danger potential with satellite remote sensing techniques. The critical components of our system include real-time data acquisition and a processing system, which collects realtime datasets from NASA. The MODIS Direct Broadcast system automatically provides real-time fuel property and fire characteristic products with which the generation system can retrieve real-time fuel properties and fire characteristics based on the enhancement of current algorithms, and a data distribution system which can provide our data products for various applications. In this paper, we present the general architecture and components of our system, and technical and scientific approaches for generating our value-added data products. The applications of this system are also discussed.

Forest Fire Potential Modeling and Simulation of its Extension Using Remote Sensing Data and GIS: (A Protected Area of Arasbaran)

Forest fire models are generally used in different aspects of fire management and are helpful in understanding and prediction of fire behavior. Forest fires cause a significant damage for public property by destroying a large tract of forest.  This helps fire fighters to focus on an area with greater risk and to develop better substructure for fire fighter training and ultimately to plan fire-f...

Spatio-Temporal Analysis of Forest Fire Risk and Danger Using LANDSAT Imagery

Computing fire danger and fire risk on a spatio-temporal scale is of crucial importance in fire management planning, and in the simulation of fire growth and development across a landscape. However, due to the complex nature of forests, fire risk and danger potential maps are considered one of the most difficult thematic layers to build up. Remote sensing and digital terrain data have been intr...

Development of a New Daily-Scale Forest Fire Danger Forecasting System Using Remote Sensing Data

Forest fires are a critical natural disturbance in most of the forested ecosystems around the globe, including the Canadian boreal forest where fires are recurrent. Here, our goal was to develop a new daily-scale forest fire danger forecasting system (FFDFS) using remote sensing data and implement it over the northern part of Canadian province of Alberta during 2009–2011 fire seasons. The daily...

Localization Boyan algorithm to detect forest fires from MODIS sensor images

Of phenomena which much damage and irreparable import to forests and natural resources is the fire that each year, more than 100 fires occur in Iran and thousands of hectares of trees and plants eliminates. Given that fire risk is high in most parts of the world, full and continuous monitoring on this natural phenomenon, is essential. Use remote sensing is a way to identify and manage fire. Ahe...
